about

A previously lost album from 2006 Detroit.

Cielos recorded one album and played one show, both documented here, then broke up. Their lone composition is thirty minutes of continuous music that touches on Shoegaze, Ambient, Post-Rock, Psychedelia, Post-Punk, & Post-Hardcore.

Features members of many MI bands including Touch the Clouds, Bang! Bang!, Few & Far Between, Lovesick, Hamilton, I, The Magician, Red Iron Orchestra, Malakhai, Heads Will Roll, Nice Hooves, The Silence of Fall, The American Drama, Charlevoix, Chore, and many many more.

A narrative written a thousand times before, Cielos was born in a basement.

Unique to this story, Cielos was born out of bass and drums. A couple living together, breathing together, working together, bonded together through matrimony. A couple living in rhythm, both figuratively and literally.

Within days, the evolution to include guitar, creative being attached.

The story yielded three roommates, one lone house, three cats, two dogs, a triangle backyard, an attic closet, methamphetamine manufacturing neighbors.

They made the best roommates. They knew when to give space, they knew when to write. They wrote. They lived. They worked. They wrote.

While shootouts took place on the lawn, plastic hubcaps stolen from cars, Cielos welcomed a second guitar and vocals. Writing continued. As it does.

As with the Heavens, the gates were open, a final member greeted. The dynamic and ambiance complete. The writing found its final footing.

The pentagon. The five. Brian, Nikkie, Charley, Chris, Dave. An unlikely unit. An unlikely fit. Even if bands may bring out the dark, music brings the light.

The song (a vision) grew. Conceptually, it was always there. Discussed in the depths of the basement on the wood-raised Arc meant to circumvent the flood. A surrounding wall crafted to instead keep out cats, dogs, and pests.

The song, a story. Interwoven fabrics of disparate tales. An initial stretch before the race truly begins. A maniacal spiral, the highest highs, and lowest lows. An arduous journey. Wrought with tension, entwined in angst. Continuous, ominous, feverish, ardent. Breadth and depth.

Discord strikes, as it generally does in the narrative of musicians. Still, before that imminent demise, Cielos recorded this chronicle live with the ever-talented Erik Maluchnik, and in-studio with audio visionaries Tim Pak and Chris Koltay.

The band members live on as dysfunctional friends. Happily ever after.
